Talk About Sex and Horses? WOW!

I was just talking to a friend of mine in the UK about the use of SEX in advertisments, blogs, etc.  She was wondering if the use of the word “sex”  would improve traffic statistics.  So she is doing a study on it.  Personally I think that SEX will always sell products.  It’s all over the internet, TV, magazines, billboards and such.  It stands to reason that if sex did not work, advertising agents would not use it.  Hey who doesn’t like sex, right?

Ok, the talk about horses came up with my friend Mandy Allen’s association with helping “World of Whispers” which is an organization who is saving a herd of horses.  Helen Wingstedt runs the project and you can read more the project HERE. Please feel free to make a monitary or professional donation at “World of Whispers” to help them out if you can.

I’m sure the photo has your attention now, right?  Well I want to tell you that Mandy and her partner are running a Photo Exhibit of the the herd of horses at her gallery until 22 November 2009.  They are selling a limited amount of each photo (25 each) and you can now buy them on-line RIGHT HERE!  If you like the photo above you will LOVE the others. You’ll know why I respect Mandy when I tell you that all profits go directly to the horses.  How great is that!  You get a great photo or two and help save the horses at the same time.  It is a win, win situation.

10 Simple Strategies to Help the Environment

There are many simple steps you can take to help the environment. Most often, the small choices we make in our everyday lives are what make the difference. Most environmental problems today are the result of actions taken by billions of people around the world. If enough people make the effort to become eco-friendly the results would be monumental.

Here are some simple strategies that you can implement:

1. Drive Less, Walk More

This is advantageous in three ways – it helps the environment, it saves you money and it’s good for your health! Sometimes driving cannot be avoided, but try to cut down on the number of trips to the grocery store or mall, carpool when possible and walk or ride a bicycle when you can.

2. Clean Green

Join the “clean green” movement by buying natural or organic cleaning products, or by using inexpensive household products like vinegar, baking soda and lemon juice. These products are less toxic for your home, family and pets. They are also better for the environment than products that use harsh chemicals that end up in our air, ground soil and water supplies.

3. Make Your Pets Green

You can enlist your furry friends to help the environment as well. Natural and organic pet foods, shampoos, flea and tick repellents and other pet supplies are now easily found.

4. Keep Temperatures Comfortable but Moderate

If you want to save money on your electric bill and help the environment, set your heat to 68 degrees in winter and 78 degrees in summer.

5. Shop Locally

Food and other items that have to be shipped long distances use up a lot more energy than those produced in your own community. Look for farmer’s markets for your produce and local stores for your shopping needs.

6. Create A Simple Recycling System

Make it easy for your household to recycle. Have a system everyone understands and share responsibilities to keep it in order. Use clearly marked bins, boxes or bags for recycled item like glass, newspapers and metal.

7. Go Paperless

You can cut down on paper use by paying bills and conducting transactions online.  Also try to cut down on the number of junk mail lists you are on.

8. Check Your Home’s Insulation

If your home is well insulated, you can cut down on heating costs, which saves energy for everyone. If you are really ambitious, you can look into alternative energy options like solar, which can reduce energy usage even more.

9. Eat Less Meat

Not everyone wants to be a vegetarian, but by even cutting back on your meat consumption you are helping the environment. Factory farms are a major source of energy consumption, as it’s very expensive to raise all those animals and feed them. If you do eat meat, consider patronizing local farms that use natural or organic methods of production.

10. Look For More Ways to Recycle

Recycling just means reusing something. Many things people buy new could be bought much cheaper used without much sacrifice. This includes cars, clothing, furniture, toys and electronic gadgets. In the same manner, pass things on to others when you finished with them rather than sending them to the dump.

These simple strategies can help spark your imagination to find your own ways to help the environment.

Fireplace Inserts

You can save money and help the environment by using less electricity, gas or oil by turning your fireplace into an energy efficient, heating source with a fireplace insert. By using a fireplace inserts you will not only save money on your heating costs by cutting down your utility bill, you will add a classy, warm and cozy look to your home. Everyone with older wood burning fireplaces can benefit from the installation of a fireplace insert. Generally, older fireplaces have efficiency ratings of just five to ten percent. This low efficiency is due to the open combustion design that allows an abundance of heated room air to be drawn into the fire, causing the fire to burn too fast and wasting energy. In contrast, a fireplace insert is an insulated, closed-door system that slows the fire down and increases the temperature of the fire to facilitate more complete combustion. This closed combustion system can assist in generating efficiencies of above 65 percent in many cases which can translate into more heat output. And, when it comes to burning wood, an EPA-certified wood burning fireplace insert can also reduce, emissions from wood burning down to zero.

Fireplace inserts come in a variety of sizes to fit all types of fireplaces. They also come in many styles, shapes, colors, and features to suit all tastes and styles. You can find an insert that will compliment basically any type of décor. Many manufacturers also augment the operation of fireplace inserts by offering state-of-the-art features such as fans and thermostatic controls. High quality and efficiency allows you to maximize your heat output with less need for wood. You want to choose models that are equipped with a sturdy pan to collect the ash and which are constructed with state of the art cast iron. Most models have a longer over night burning duration, and you want to make sure yours does if you want your house to be heated through the night without having to kick on the heat. You also want to have accessible controls that are designed on the unit and a thermostat to control the fan for desired heating levels.

The installation is fairly easy. Once the insert is installed it looks like a custom designed unit. Fireplace inserts are made from cast iron or steel and have self-cleaning glass doors that allow the dancing flames of the fire to be viewed while the insulated doors remain closed, making the fire more efficient.

If you have a fireplace and want to become energy efficient, environmentally friendly, add an amazing, breathtaking view to your home, and most importantly cut the costs of your current heating bills, then fireplace inserts will be the solution for you and your family.

Wood Pellet Stoves- An Eco Friendly Heating Choice

The burning of wood to heat a home is not a new concept. Wood burning stoves have been used for hundreds of years. Burning wood is still an effective way to heat your home. Since wood pellet stoves were invented, burning wood to heat your home has become even easier and cheaper.

Wood pellet stoves are smaller and more efficient then the wood burning stove. Because of there size, they can be placed in many areas of your home where a larger wood stove or fireplace would not be practical. Many of the styles are also designed to be hooked into your existing heating ducts and chimney, which means that you can quickly and efficiently heat your entire home.

Pellet stoves are easier to use than a wood stove. Wood stoves require that you cut and split wood and you have to store large quantities of wood. The pellet stove fuel comes in clean 40 pound bags that are free of insects and easy to store. Most consumers will use between 1 to 1.5 bags of pellets per day making it necessary to reload the pellet stove about once per day with a clean bag of pellets, as compared to walking out side to pick up another arm load of wood them carry the wood inside. Wood burning pellet stoves burn small pellets, usually only about an inch long, made from sawdust. The sawdust is subjected to a great deal of pressure which creates very compressed pellets that are lightweight and burn for a long time.

The pellet stove is available in many styles and designs that can fit any home decor. Some pellet stoves have a very traditional look with cast iron while others are more contemporary in design. Most of the newer pellet stoves are fully automatic, meaning that the stove can be operated just like a furnace, having the ability to be operated with a thermostat which turns the pellet stove off and on depending on the heat demand of the room.

In today’s economy, everyone is looking for a way to reduce their heating costs. The wood pellet stoves might be the answer that you are looking for. Although there are some costs involved with the purchase and installation of a wood pellet stove, you will find that it quickly pays for itself because heating with traditional fuels such as natural gas and oil is extremely expensive. Instead of logs, pellet stoves burn a renewable fuel made of ground, dried wood and other biomass wastes compressed into pellets. They are some of the cleanest-burning heating appliances available today and deliver high overall efficiency.

Corn Pellet Stoves- An Environmentally Friendly Heating Choice

Corn pellet stoves are a popular choice among homeowners as an alternative heating system. Corn pellet stoves help to reduce our dependency on foreign oil. Corn is also a clean burning fuel source which helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions which contribute to global warming. Corn is a natural and renewable energy source.

Corn pellet stoves are very similar to wood pellet stoves except they are specifically designed to burn corn which is a renewable energy source. Their small compact design and the fact that they only require a 4 inch vent for smoke to exit your house makes it possible for them to be installed in almost any room in your home. The fact that they can easily be hooked into existing heating ducts means that a single stove may be all you need to efficiently heat your entire house.

Corn pellet stoves burn more efficiently than wood pellet stoves, but they require more maintenance. The higher moisture content of corn means that they leave more residue both in the stove and the vent. This residue needs to be removed frequently so that the stove functions properly.

Pellet stoves come in many sizes and styles, so you are sure to be able to find one that matches your decor. Some of the more popular styles feature glass enclosures that allow you to watch the flames and gives you the ambiance of a traditional wood burning fireplace.

Corn pellet stoves may be the perfect solution to the high cost of heating your home with fossil fuels which are not renewable. They not only allow you to heat your home efficiently and cheaply, but they also ensure that our nation’s farmers have a continuous market for their grain.

Seven Reasons Why We Should Go Green

Not so long ago becoming environmentally friendly was pretty extreme, associated with hippies or people who wanted to drop out of society and live on a commune. Today, however, with growing awareness of global warming and other environmental problems, more and more people are realizing that there are many answers to the question, “Why go green?” Here are some you may want to think about.

1. Think about Future Generations If you have children don’t you want them to grow up in a world that is healthy and sustainable? One of the reasons we have problems today is that for a long time, people were short-sighted and didn’t think about the future.

2. Think about Your Own Future The fact is, many people living today may have to face the consequences of climate change, pollution, deforestation and other environmental issues. It’s not just your children you need to be concerned for –it’s yourself. Many of these issues are affecting the world right now. If you need evidence for this, just look at the frequency and severity of storms, tsunamis and other devastating weather events.

3. Green Is Healthier Many green activities, from eating more naturally, to using non-toxic household cleaners, to gardening organically are healthier for you. You can reduce your exposure to harmful chemicals by developing green habits.

4. Save Money You can also save money be driving less, using less heat and air conditioning and conserving on electricity. All of these activities conserve energy and reduce your bills at the same time.

5. Reduce Clutter By reducing the amount of paper you use, you are not only helping to conserve trees and reduce paper waste, but you can significantly reduce clutter in your home. Paper clutter can cause you to feel disorganized, so get rid of as much of it as you can by doing more tasks online.

6. Spend More Time Outdoors Many green tasks, such as gardening, composting and walking or biking as alternative modes of transportation involve spending healthy outdoor time. Walking and biking are also good forms of exercise which can improve your health. Spending time outdoors also allows you to socialize with your friends and neighbors.

7. Educate Yourself Going green involves learning more about the world, how things grow, the climate and other important issues. As you learn why each issue is important, you are also getting an education. Why go green? It’s healthy for the planet, your body and your wallet!

Seven Easy Steps to Becoming Environmentally Friendly

Did you know that there are many easy things you can do to save our environment?  By changing some of our everyday actions, we can all help the whole planet! Here are some examples of green tips that can make the world cleaner and healthier for everyone.

1. Use Less Gas – you can walk or bike short distances, which is good for your health as well as the environment. When you do need to use a car, organize your trips so that you carpool, and make fewer trips to buy necessities.

2. Save Energy – remember to turn off light switches when you aren’t in the room. Replace old bulbs with energy efficient ones, such as compact fluorescent light bulbs, or CFLs. These use far less energy than conventional bulbs. You can also keep your thermostat a little lower in the winter and only use air conditioning if it’s extremely hot in the summer (exhaust fans work well the rest of the time).

3. Conserve Water – water is our most precious natural resource, so use it with awareness. Take shorter showers. Don’t buy new bottles of water to drink every day. Get a bottle you can carry with you and fill it up using filtered water.

4. Recycle Clothes and Furniture – there’s no shame in acquiring used items that are functional. You can find many such items in good condition online, at yard sales or at stores that specialize in such merchandise. Likewise, when you are finished with something don’t simply throw it out, but donate it.

5. Eat with Awareness – shop locally when possible. There are more farmers’ markets and community supported agriculture (CSAs) where you can buy produce. If you eat meat, buy from local organic farms rather than factory farms. Reducing meat consumption helps the environment, as it takes a great deal of energy to raise livestock.

6. Clean with Non-Toxic Products – you can buy gentle and organic cleaning supplies rather than commercial ones, which are made from harsh chemicals. You can also make your own cleaning supplies from lemon juice, baking soda and vinegar.

7. Reduce Paper Use – do more tasks online to save on paper bills and other paper products. Bring your own bags to the store so you don’t require paper or plastic bags every time you shop. Remove yourself from junk mail lists.

These are some examples of practical things you can do to save our environment. It mainly takes awareness of how the little things you do add up!

A Simple Guide to Green Living

Are you looking to adapt a “greener” lifestyle? It is easier than you think. Today, there is more and more information about how to make your everyday actions environmentally friendly. Let’s look at some simple ways to start living green.

The first thing that you can do is start recycling. Recycling is something that everyone is talking about today, and for a good reason. Not so long ago we simply discarded items such as aluminum cans, bottles, leftover food, newspapers, junk mail and plastics. They were either burned, left at dumps or even thrown into bodies of water. Recycling is a way to make sure that we reuse as much as possible. In your home, you can contribute to this effort by keeping recyclable items separated. They can then be picked up or delivered by you to your local recycling center.

Composting and organic gardening is another area where you can get green, in the most literal sense. Many foods that you throw out make great compost and can help your garden, whether you want to grow flowers or vegetables. If you don’t have room for a garden, you may be able to find community gardens in your town or city where you can inexpensively rent a small parcel of land and have your own garden.

One of the most important aspects of green living is conservation. Conserving energy in your home, office and car is good for the environment because it means less pollution and fewer resources getting used up. It’s also good for your pocketbook, as you save on energy costs. You can very often make some small changes that can make a big difference. For example, you might keep the temperature in your home 68 instead of 70 in the winter. You can also plan your driving more strategically, making fewer runs to the store.

Another way you can go green is by using less paper. This can be accomplished by doing more tasks online, and by opting out of bulk or junk mail lists. You can consider reading more of your news online, as opposed to buying bulky (with advertising supplements!) weekend papers. An added benefit to this practice is less clutter around your house.

Getting on board with green living isn’t a matter of doing one or two spectacular things. It’s more how you live every day. Almost every part of your life can become “greener” if you put your mind to it!

Aluminum Recycling

Recycling aluminum saves natural resources and energy.  Recycled aluminum can be used to make bikes, autos, airplanes, boats, computers, and cookware. Aluminum is mostly used to make beverage cans. Aluminum can be recycled indefinitely because it is a sustainable metal. Aluminum cans are the most recycled item in the United States. According to Earth911, 54 billion cans were recycled in 2007 which saved the energy equivalent of 15 million barrels of oil-America’s entire gas consumption for a day.

According to the EPA, recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to run a 100 watt bulb for 20 hours, a computer for 3 hours, or a TV for 2 hours. A used recycled can be made into a new can in approximately 2 months.

Aluminum cans also can be recycled to raise money for worthy causes. Cans for Causes raises money for Habitat for Humanity, schools, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Lions Club, YMCA’s, PTA’s, and various other organizations. Just think you can recycle and also help out your favorite organization at the same time.

Aluminum foil is a widely used household item. It can be used to wrap you food. Americans recycle 65 to 70% of the aluminum they use in the household. Most of which is aluminum cans. Americans throw away three pounds of aluminum foil every year. It takes almost 400 years for aluminum foil to break down in a landfill.
